Internet tops 100 million sites
November 1st, 2006 by Lloyd Gofton
According to Netcraft, the UK based Internet services and research company, the Internet has topped 100 million sites in November. Netcraft’s latest web server survey shows a response from 101,435,253 sites, up from 97.9 million sites in October.
As expected, the growth of social media and ongoing web expansion from businesses of all types has swelled the figures. In fact, 27.4 million sites have been added so far in 2006, compared to the full year figure in 2005 of 17 million sites added.
The report also confirms the Internet has doubled in size in a little over two years (May 2004), when the figure was 50 million.
To put this into perspective, the first Netcraft survey carried out in August 1995 identified 18,957 hosts and the 1 million mark was reached in April 1997.
The graph below charts the rise.
