Research: social media and TV e-book
October 2nd, 2008
As you may have noticed, at Liberate Media we don’t just promote the digital sector, but we like to really get under the skin of issues and technologies and build our knowledge. We also feel it’s important to share our findings either through our blog, via the resource, and now through a series of brief ebooks the first of which is available to download now.
The first ebook focuses on the use of social media to promote TV programming, titled: Social Media and TV. We’ve looked into the key strategies employed by a number of well known programmes that have embraced social media to connect with target audiences, as well as the campaign results where available.
We hope you find the research useful, and thanks to Andy for pulling it all together.
As always, do let us know what you think and watch this space for more ebooks.

Timelines are a Great Way to Share Information
May 19th, 2008

Today we’ve come across a great site called Dipity - a timeline creation tool, that we thought might be of interest to some of our readers. It offers a nice and easy visual way to share information on any given topic.

“Dipity is the easiest way to make and share interactive timelines about the people and things you care about.” - a claim from the site.
The timelines them selves are quite hard to follow, especially if you have crammed loads of events in over the space of a week. But you can get around this by being able to view the contents in other ways such as the list view and flip book view.
We were particularly interested in the technology section which houses over 170 timeliness such as TechMeme, Adobe Air, TechCrunch, already created.
One nice feature I must commend them on is the sign-up process, where you can input put your Twitter user name, and import a blog feed among other things, which starts you off with your own personal timeline - this is basically a more visual type of life stream or digital footprint.
Other nice ways to use the timeline could be for presentations or research purposes…

Social media resource

The Liberate Media social media research/resources page is where we archive all our social media and web 2.0 resources/findings. There is a huge amount of resource to be looked at, so please feel free to dig around at your leisure.
Liberate Media is always keen to add to the social media resource with new posts, so please get in touch if you have something of value to add. - The resource map will be ever growing with new headings and links being added all the time.
The social media resource/research is very heavy due to large amount of archived resource, it takes a little while to appear, but please be patient, it’s well worth the wait!
To use the resource map simply hold the left mouse button down and scroll around until you see the section you want to look at. Click the bars next to the paper-clip to get a description of the archive, then click the paper-clip to get a list of posts in that resource.
To add the resource/research map copy and paste the code below into your blog:

Social media is an unconventional new opportunity
April 3rd, 2008
I thought that might get your attention.
We came across some interesting research in the office recently (thanks Bill) that i wanted to share with you. It comes from TNS Media Intelligence Cymfony which is a U.S. market influence analytics company, that also spawned that little beauty of a headline (see bullet point two below).
I’ll admit that I’m not familiar with the company, but the research is certainly worth a second look. The piece in question focuses on Social Media’s progress toward becoming a mainstream marketing communications tool, titled: “Harnessing Influence: How Savvy Brands are Unleashing the New Power of Blogs and other Social Media.” check out the press release for further info.
The survey has a few little gems of information in it, and even professes to use an international sample (U.S., UK, Canada and France).
Here’s an interesting excerpt:
‘The leading barriers to social media adoption were the lack of both senior management commitment and best practices, followed by the absence of controls, standardisation, time and resources.
‘Respondents criticised marketing service suppliers for not providing sufficient expertise to help businesses understand and exploit blogs and social networks. They noted that many agencies lack practical experience in social media initiatives and tend to apply traditional tactics that may not be effective in this emerging media space.’
Of all the stats and information, I found these points to be the most interesting. It shows that social media is now entering a new phase of understanding. In the not to distant past we might have seen a similar survey saying ‘barriers to social media adoption were a lack of knowledge or awareness’. Now it seems we’ve moved on and those halting social media progress are the guys at the top, who are often slow to react, and those who should have the knowledge - the marketeers.
Although this still represents a considerable barrier i feel it is evidence of progress, and as both interest and expertise continues to grow, the ‘95% that believe social media will grow in significance’ certainly seem to have a safe bet.
Here’s a quick summary of some of the key points:
- 49% of execs say social media should be monitored at the executive level and be allocated significant resources
- Some 30% of marketing executives agree that social media is an unconventional new opportunity that businesses must grasp with a sense of urgency.
- 95% say they believe that social media will grow in significance over the next five years.
- Asked about the uses of social media, respondents endorsed it as a strategic tool to gain consumer insights (37%), build brand awareness (21%) and increase customer loyalty (18%)
You can get a full copy of the research from TNS Media Intelligence Cymfony’s social media research site, but be warned it appears the sample size was ‘70+ marketers around the globe ‘ so I’ll let you decide if that’s a robust sample size: socialmediainbusiness

Social Media And Web 2.0 Online Resource And Research map
January 29th, 2008
At Liberate Media we feel strongly that social media should be free and accessible to all. A big part of social media is being able to access information/stories/videos photos etc, take that content, and place it and share it where ever you want whenever you want.
Which is why Liberate media wants to give something back and show that there are a couple of PR companies digging trenches and filling the sandbags! We are going to share our research work into social media and web 2.0 over the last 12 months with you.
There has been a lot of talk recently about how PR folk just don’t get social media, don’t know what it is, don’t know how to harness it and don’t know how to measure the results. This is true to some extent, but for us a new form of communication is always at the forefront of our thinking. So to help our fellow PR professionals and anyone else who is interested in social media and web 2.0, please take a minute to check out our archive of posts. You might even learn something!
The archive is set out by topic, and in each topic there are relevant posts for that heading. It will make more sense when you actually look at it. New headings are added all the time and a round-up of new links added will feature in a blog post every Friday (make sure you subscribe to our blog to you don’t want to miss it).
VIEW THE RESOURCE/RESEARCH MAP HERE:
The code for the map is below - please feel free copy and paste this and embed this into your blog.

/html/map_content.html?graphId=226″ height=”500px” width=”95%” ></iframe>
If you have any more ideas on how to improve the resource, research archive or think any headers are missing, or would like us to add any relevant posts, please get in touch.
