Gustav creates an online social media storm
September 1st, 2008
I have been following the Gustav hurricane updates today on Twitter and am amazed by the amount of people talking about it over social networks and with social online tools.
Twitter has also been embraced as a ‘perfect storm’ for Twitter - A CNN reporter named Rick Sanchez has embraced Twitter with a vengance, calling on Twitter users to feed him information from the hurricane zone.
Twitter says Gustav is the most trended word of the day followed by Hurricane Gustav and #gustav - no surprise really!
Other sources of information include a blog called Gustav Bloggers - a group of concerned techies from the Internet sector who are based in New Orleans and survived Katrina from a New Orleans skyrise with NO DOWNTIME.
You can track Hurrican Gustav in Google Earth, listen to updates via Fox News radio, watch Hurricane Gustav Webcams or join a Ning group called ‘Gustav Information Center - Alerts and Information Regarding Hurricane Gustav’.
For more information also check out Gustav’s own Wiki page and the official Wikipedia page online at Hurricane Gustav.
It great to see people using social media as a way of communicating the latest happening for others that are not in direct contact with Gustav, but want to be kept updated in real time.

As the Twitter phenomenon continues, I was amazed to see some of the Compete statistics for the microblogging site over the past 12 months. It is ranked 625 out of the top one million sites visited on the Internet. Other similar sites including Pownce and Jaiku seem to have been massively left behind by the Twitter juggernaut.
Hide| Date: 07/2008 | People | Month Δ ![]() |
Year Δ ![]() |
|
|---|---|---|---|---|
| twitter.com | 2,218,330 | 21.9%![]() |
413.4%![]() |
|
| pownce.com | 141,022 | -6.6%![]() |
-46.2%![]() |
|
| jaiku.com | 75,205 | -28.2%![]() |
-6.4%![]() |
As just a token comparison I also checked out Amazon.co.uk - it came in at 744 out of the top one million sites visited on the Internet.
You would have though a massive internet retailer would be more poular than a microblog, but it just goes to show that social networking rules!
New web 2.0 Number 10 website review
August 12th, 2008
Normally I would not go any where near this site, but out of interest and a tip off on Twitter from Drew B which read -
drewb 10 Downing Street has unveiled it’s new ‘Beta’ site. It looks all web 2.0 with Flickr and Twitter right in there http://www.number10.gov.uk/
It got me very excited!
The words Beta, web 2.0, Flickr, Twitter, and 10 Downing Street, don’t go together do they?
They do now!
First impressions of the Number 10 site are very impressive, the site seam very clean and well laid out.
On the right hand side you have nice big coloured boxes showcasing the latest PM’s activities from web 2.0 main stream sites such as Fickr, Youtube and the PM’s Twitter channel, all of which can be Dugg shared on Del.icio.us or Facebook and have their own RSS feeds.
Other nice additions include Number 10 TV based on the Brightcove platform, podcasts and even transcripts of the podcasts. They have also included a webchat feature that allows you to pose questions direct to the people who make the decisions which affect your lives.
It’s nice to see that the powers that be are taking interaction, new innovations, and embracing web 2.0 in a positive fashion.
Here is the new web introduction video.

As a PR company we always have our ear to the ground, and Twitter is a place were negitivity can be spawned so quickly that it’s crucial you’re monitoring conversations about you and your company.
Here are some tools that might help.
Monitter is very new on the scene - it’s a Twitter monitor that lets you “monitor” the Twitter world for a set of three keywords and watch what people are saying.
Looks nice, although it’s a shame it only lets you track 3 keywords. It also allows you to take an RSS feed for the keyword.
TweetDeck aims to make all your Twitter experience as accessible as possible.
You can put your followers into groups, and save keyword searches. The drawback to Tweetdeck is that the timeframe is only 48 hrs, so aything after that can not be accessed. I still do think that TweetDeck is a break through act and is still in Beta so expect more to come.
Twist is a very nice embeddable graph, where you can input several keywords. You can create a chart of keywords from the last week or last month. A nice way of visually monitoring keywords on Twitter.
Twittermeter is similar to the above but without the embedding option.
Tweetstats is a way to monitor people by their Twitter username. It gives you some really nice graphs of your timeline, hourly tweets, a tag cloud and some other nice graphs. Great little site to monitor useage.
If you want to monitor the latest Twitter trends Twitterscoop is a good place to start. The landing page offers you a tag cloud and a hot topics section, and you can also search for your own topics.
Twitturly gives you a real time list of the url’s people are talking about.
Hopefully these will get you started - if you have any amazing tools to offer please let me know.
